The U.S. Embassy, Bucharest, and the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, along with the American Councils for International Education are pleased to invite Romanian high school students to participate in the FLEX – Future Leaders Exchange Program.
FLEX is an educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. It offers Romanian high school students an opportunity to study at an American high school and to live with an American family along the 2016-2017 academic year. Participation in the FLEX program is free.
What is FLEX?
The FLEX program was created by the United States Congress in 1992. Along its 24 years of existence, the FLEX program has provided scholarships to over 24,000 secondary school students from Europe, Eurasia, and Central Asia. It offers a year-long trip to the United States to study in an American high school. The goal of the program is to promote mutual understanding between citizens of the United States and countries in the regions where FLEX exists. Students learn more about the U.S. and teach Americans about their countries. In the academic year 2016 – 2017, over 800 FLEX scholarships will be awarded for high school students to study in the U.S. Each FLEX student will live with an American family and will study at an American high school.
Who sponsors the program?
This scholarship program is fully sponsored by the United States government and administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State. ECA programs include educational and training programs that promote personal, professional, and institutional ties between private citizens and organizations in the United States and abroad.
Who is eligible?
The FLEX competition is open to high school students who meet all of the following requirements:
– are Romanian citizens;
– were born between January 1, 1999 and July 15, 2001;
– are currently in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grades;
– have studied English in high school;
– meet U.S. visa eligibility requirements and have not stayed in the U.S. for three months or more during the past five years.
We strongly encourage high school students with disabilities to apply to FLEX; the program infrastructure allows for recruiting and participation adapted to their specific needs.
Interested high school students are invited to apply online no later than October 16, 2015 by visiting https://ais.americancouncils.org/flex
“After the FLEX program, the whole world changed for me. I met so many people in America, heard a lot of different opinions. I learned and tried many new things during this year. If you are unsure about participating in FLEX, I definitely recommend you to do this. Broaden your mind, learn, try, enjoy, share your culture all over, and be happy.”
