Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Bucharest, Romania (April 13, 2020)
Location: Romania
Event: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. The most recent CDC guidance is here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cloth-face-cover.html. In addition, the Romanian government continues to urge the use of face coverings outside homes and offices.
Commercial flights remain suspended through April 20 to and from most European connections (United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium) as well as Turkey. TAROM suspended international and domestic service through May 1. Wizz Air still operates flights to Lisbon, Malmo, Stockholm, and Oslo. Qatar Airways has a planned flight from Bucharest to Doha on Thursday, April 16 which may then permit connection to Chicago O’Hare airport. Additional one-time flights are available when demand is sufficient to support a flight but they occur with little to no notice. The U.S. government does not anticipate arranging repatriation flights in Romania at this time.
Please continue to monitor all security alerts from the U.S. Embassy and obey all ordinances currently put in place by the Romanian government. The latest updates from the Romanian Ministry of Interior are available here.
