Getting a Romanian Residence Permit

U.S. citizens are allowed to visit Romania without a visa for a total of 90 days within a 6 months period. Foreigners must register their presence with the nearest Police Precinct or Immigration Office within 3 days from their arrival in Romania.

For any stay longer than 90 days, a temporary residency permit (permis de sedere) must be requested from the Romanian Immigration Inspectorate (Inspectoratul Roman pentru Imigrari). Contact information, application requirements and fees for residence permits can be found on the website of the Romanian Immigration Department.

You should submit your application for an extension of stay in Romania/residency permit at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your 90 days of stay without a visa. Failure to apply in a timely manner may result in penalties.

Foreigners are required to carry identification documents at all times. U.S. citizens who obtain a temporary or permanent residence permit must present the document upon the request of any “competent authorities.” Foreigners who do not have a residence permit should present their passports.
